Neue Jüdische Kammerphilharmonie
Dresden, New Synagogue
(as part of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele)*
An artistic lightweight, neo-classicistic and simplistic – the Nazi cultural ideologists did a thorough job defaming Mendelssohn and his oeuvre, which suffered for decades afterwards as a result. Other composers were deported and their works burned. The New Jewish Chamber Philharmonic Dresden was founded in order to focus on these life stories and fates. As one of the youngest orchestras in Dresden, the ensemble performs mainly works by Jewish composers. The Dresden Synagogue forms the backdrop for the performance of works by Haas, Rózsa, Zeisl, Schreker and Mendelssohn’s Concerto in D-Minor. The evening’s soloist is Arnaud Sussmann, a young promising violinist who has already appeared successfully at Carnegie Hall and with the New York Philharmonic.

"Ein unvollendetes Leben": Ein Film von Herbert Krill
WDR Fernsechen

Vienna to Hollywood @ Riverview School
Riverview School, 551 Route 6A, East Sandwich
“Vienna to Hollywood” is a project created by soprano, Melanie Henley Heyn, and pianist, Deirdre Brenner, which explores the personal and musical journeys of a group of Jewish composers who fled Austria just before WWII and eventually found their way to Los Angeles. They look at what it was about LA during the 1930s and 40s that attracted these émigrés, and what made them decide to stay.
Some of the composers, such as Arnold Schoenberg and Erich Korngold, are quite well known. Schoenberg is often referred to as “The Father of Modern Music” and Korngold is best known for his work in the film industry, composing scores for films such as The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Sea Hawk. The other composers featured on this program, Hanns Eisler, Ernst Krenek, Ernst Toch and Erich Zeisl are less-known but no less significant. It is the intention of this project to bring attention to the works of these great composers and to highlight their influence on the musical culture of post-war America. Read more >

Zina Schiff features 20th-century composers
Temple Emanu-El (2 Lake Street San Francisco, CA)
Hailed by the New York Times as an instrumentalist of "luscious high voltage," violinist Zina Schiff comes to Temple Emanu-El. A protege of master violinist Jascha Heifetz, Schiff has toured the world, performed on film scores, appeared on NPR and PBS, and recorded a number of critically acclaimed albums. For this concert, she'll be joined by pianist Zsuzsanna Lukacs in a program highlighting American works with a Jewish twist, including pieces by Eric Zeisl, Aaron Copeland and George Gershwin.
